Here we are, at an enormous moment in our blog series–we’re celebrating 50 amazing stories about people who went through Architecture Registration Exams. This moment marks not just a numerical milestone, but a testament to the resilience, dedication, and shared aspirations of an entire community. I am privileged to collect all these stories and be able to share them with you!
We shared the 50th story last week!
These Architects decided to share their experiences with us. And that’s significant because it’s difficult to talk about our failures, challenges, and times of struggle. They opened their hearts and minds to help others who might be going through the same. That’s like giving a big, warm hug to anyone reading these stories.
As the stories of this series unfold, revealing the heartaches and jubilations of these architects, I am left profoundly humbled by the sheer magnitude of individuals who have shared their stories. Each story shared represents a tapestry woven from threads of struggle, hope, and eventual triumph. The willingness to bare one’s soul, to offer their journey as a guiding light for others treading a similar path, is an act of unadulterated generosity that strikes a chord deep within me. I know I felt alone on my journey through the exams and I hope these stories can empower you to know that you are not alone!
And as we read these stories, let’s remember that we’re not alone on this journey – we have an entire group of Architects cheering us on!

Tears of empathy, of pride, and of sheer admiration for the strength that each architect exuded. Every story, every account of perseverance, ignited a whirlwind of emotions within me–from excitement to inspiration and from humility to unwavering pride.
Inspiration in Every Story:
Even those Architects who conquered all the exams on their very first attempt to have left an indelible mark. They are living proof that dedication and meticulous preparation can lead to exceptional success. Their stories have kindled sparks of hope in countless others, proving that the summit is attainable, no matter how steep the climb.
A Light in the Dark:
Then there are those who faced many setbacks, encountering failures that might have discouraged others from continuing. Yet, their stories are beacons of light for individuals navigating similar challenges. Their persistence and unwavering commitment have become a lifeline for those who might have faltered, reminding them that challenges are but stepping stones to victory.

For those who battled through strings of consecutive failures or who encountered that one exam that seemed insurmountable, their stories serve as powerful reminders that they are not alone. The architectural journey, though uniquely personal, is one shared by a resilient community of aspirants who face similar struggles. These architects, by sharing their experiences, have extended a hand of camaraderie and motivation to those who seek solace in knowing that others have overcome similar hurdles.

Fascinating Insights:
Our blog series has not only inspired but also provided valuable insights into the architecture registration exams. I don’t have as detailed information that NCARB is able to share, but I am able to connect you with the more personal side of this journey. I hope that between the NCARB by the Numbers stats, and this series you are able to find the motivation you need for your licensure voyage. Here are some compelling facts and figures that have emerged from the stories we’ve shared:
94% Embrace ARE 5.0:
A resounding majority of our featured Architects have taken on the challenge of the ARE 5.0 exams, reflecting the industry’s transition to this updated framework. No matter what version of the registration exams you still have valuable insights and advice to mentor those taking the current version of the exams.
70% of Architects pursued their licensure journey exclusively through the ARE 5.0 exams, showcasing their dedication to mastering this version.
4% of the Architects completed the California Supplemental Exam (CSE) to become licensed Architects in the state of California.
Transitioning and Adapting:
Approximately 24% of individuals made the leap between the 4.0 and 5.0 versions, highlighting their adaptability and commitment to staying current in the field. These individuals had additional decisions to make when transitioning.
Persistence Pays Off:
On average, individuals faced 2.84 failed exams on their path to licensure. This statistic underscores the importance of persistence and learning from setbacks.
Overcoming Challenges:
12% of our featured Architects encountered significant challenges, facing more than 9 exam failures before reaching their goal – a testament to their unwavering resolve. If you are struggling through the exams know that you are not alone. These exams are not easy and failing more exams than someone else doesn’t make you a bad Architect.
Excelling Against Odds:
Conversely, 30% of Architects overcame the odds by passing all exams on their first attempt, demonstrating their thorough preparation and proficiency. It also showcases hope that is it possible.
Starting Point: Practice Management:
42% of our featured Architects embarked on their journey with the Practice Management (PcM) exam. Not all of them passed that first exam but if you are looking for an exam to start with this may be a good one for you. I also recommend checking out NCARB’s recommended order as a starting point. ARE 5.0 lends itself to a order more so than the previous versions of the exam. But there is NO exam order requirement. Do what works best for you!
The Journey Span:
The average duration between an individual’s first and last exam was 846 days, showcasing the dedication and time commitment required. Many Architects will recommend to start taking your exams as soon as possible, and I typically give that advice as well. But you need to feel ready and WANT it. It takes time and dedication to get through the exams. Just like nobody will ask you how many exams you failed nor when did you become licensed. (unless I am talking to you to share your story) Within the first 50 stories I have professionals that have started their ARE journey at all different times in their life.
Varied Timeframes:
22% of Architects completed their exams in less than a year, while 34% persevered for over three years, reflecting the diverse paths to licensure.
As we commemorate this 50th blog post, we are overwhelmed with gratitude for the incredible community that has formed around our architecture registration exam series. But we are not done! We are already working on the next 50 stories. I cannot wait to share their stories with you soon.
The stories shared, the challenges conquered, and the wisdom imparted by these Architects have truly transformed this blog into a source of inspiration and guidance for aspiring professionals. Here’s to the next 50 stories and the journeys that lie ahead – each one a step closer to architectural excellence.
